It's all a fucking blur, the compression of time via floating anxiety and tedious routine, and it was easy to put things on the screens, empathy machines as weapons of distraction and escape, effacing anxiety and routine for an hour and change. As with any year, there will be stuff I discover later than should be here, but the eyestrain says I should take a break from screens and go outside or something.
Movies (whatever that means this year):
First Class Flights:
The Vast Of Night; Possessor; First Cow; The Devil All The Time; Babyteeth; Never Rarely Sometimes Always; The Invisible Man; Portrait Of A Lady On Fire
Coach Trips:
Freaky; Swallow Palm Springs; She Dies Tomorrow; The Assistant; The Trial Of The Chicago 7; Kajillionaire; Yes God Yes; The Whistlers; American Utopia; Fourteen; Gretel & Hansel; The Rental; The Hunt; We Summon The Darkness; Borat Subsequent Moviefilm; The Trip To Greece; Tesla; An American Pickle
Plane Crashes:
Tenet (in IMAX, the last movie I saw this year in a theater, a tepid riff on Bond with a couple ace set pieces amid simplistic dross and obfuscatory sound) & On The Rocks (witless and farcical banal fantasy, the kind of bad movie Woody Allen used to make, with a "performance" by Bill Murray that I fear is 94% truthful to his day-to-day existence, and not in a good way)
Television (again, whatever that means when I can remember getting 2 and a half channels in rural Roscommon in the '80s):
Two Thumbs Up:
I May Destroy You; Schitt's Creek S6; Ted Lasso; What We Do In The Shadows S2; Betty; Lovecraft Country; Better Call Saul S5; The Queen's Gambit; Semi Detached; The Crown S4; The Great
Slightly Less Than Two Thumbs Up:
Adult Material; The Boys S2; P-Valley; The Good Place S4; Perry Mason; Brockmire S4; I Am Not OK With This; Big Mouth S3; The Good Lord Bird; Search Party S3; High Maintenance S4
Again, I'm sure there was more, but this isn't a bad lot to go on the Permanent Record. Now, it's time to rest the eyeballs. See you next year.
